Am Mittwoch steht wieder einmal ein “Dreipunkter” für die Hammers am Programm. Zu Hause gegen Birmingham City ist ein Pflichtsieg, zumal nach der Niederlage gegen “fellow struggler” Burnley am Wochenende.
Bloß, Birmingham ist der ehemalige Klub der neuen West Ham-Besitzer Sullivan/Gold – das ist also eine Art “Derby” und außerdem spielen Alex McLeishs “Blues” heuer eine sensationelle Saison. Vom 24. Oktober bis 23. Jänner blieb man 15 (fünfzehn) Bewerbspiele ungeschlagen. Erst Tabellenführer Chelsea musste Birmingham City sich Ende Jänner geschlagen geben! Bei West Ham kann man nur hoffen, dass das der Knick in einer tollen Saison war und auch der Derby-Charakter Birmingham nicht zu einer neuerlichen Höchstleistung aufstachelt.
À propos “Aufstacheln”: man sollte meinen, dass David Sullivan und sein Co-Eigentümer David Gold nichts unversucht lassen, um ihre Mannschaft im Abstiegskampf zu motivieren. Im Augenblick schaut’s aber eher nach dem Gegenteil aus. Nicht nur vor der Übernahme des Klubs wurden die finanziellen Probleme der Hammers von Sullivan/Gold breitgetreten, vor allem seit sie den Londoner Traditionsklub erworben haben, wird “Sulli” nicht müde, auf den hohen Schuldenstand seines angeblichen “Herzensklubs” hinzuweisen.
Nun ging er mit der Forderung eines 25-prozentigen Gehaltsverzichts für Klubmitarbeiter an die Medien, erzählte, dass der Klub viel zu viele Angestellte auf der “pay roll” habe und kündigte Kündigungen an, wenn man die Gehaltskürzung nicht akzeptiere. Auch Manager Zola und die Spieler sind betroffen.
Nicht gerade eine Top-Motivation, sowas am Tag vor einem wichtigen Spiel in der Zeitung lesen zu müssen! Manager Gianfranco Zola sprach es aus:
“The article [by Sullivan] should have been done at a different time instead of just before a match like tomorrow’s. It would have been better to say what was said at another time and, maybe, talk to us [the players and staff] before the newspapers. I am not happy about it, I don’t think it does any good for the team.”
Wenn das nur gutgeht…

Don’t worry Sam, I appreciate your latest post very much. I’m as annoyed as you (and “GZ” btw) about the latest comments of Mr Sullivan. They aren’t helpful at all in the relegation fight the club is in. I hope the players are able to do tonight what the manager said yesterday: “The match is all that matters to me and the players.”

Der “Motivationskünstler” meldete sich zwei Tage nach dem 2:0-Erfolg gegen Birmingham mit einer “message from the Chairman” auf der offiziellen Website zu Wort und erklärte seine Medienpräsenz in dieser Woche wie folgt:
“By attacking the team you get them angry and they bond with the manager against the board/me – it is clear now that everyone is together and well aware of what we face ahead.
Let’s be straight. This club must remain in the Premier League. We have kept the squad together and brought in new players as we promised but we cannot rest easy and think that is it, job done. We all – and I include you the fans in this – have to do everything we can to ensure we stay up.
I’ve galvanised a team with similar tactics three or four times in the last 17 years. The managers always hate it – and I understand that – but it has never failed to work. All that said, I won’t be doing it again for a while as it is something you can only do every now and then.”
